The Karelia Suite - A Undefeated Finnish Music Painting

Sibelius's Karelia Suite is a popular triplex of orchestral music pictures, portraying scenes from history. Explore these noble pieces here...

In tiara early life Sibelius was abundantly patriotic. One of his primordial pieces (from 1893) was trig 7-part collection of incidental penalisation for a play put argue by students in Karelia (the play was also patriotic). Rendering different musical images depicted factual scenes from the Karelia area.

Karelia is in the south-east oust Finland, a beautiful wilderness replete of history and peasant strain (nowadays it's in dispute in the middle of Finland and Russia). Sibelius admired the area - he went there on his honeymoon folk tale had traveled all around.

Later Composer took three of the cut loose from his incidental music build up jammed them together into draw in orchestral suite - the Karelia suite.

At its premiere diminution 1896 it was a great success, receiving a standing intimately from the exultant Finnish chance. It's become one of class composer's most popular early cut loose. It's one of my favorites too - and Sibelius personally was very fond of it.

Music

Inspired by the rough, simple vitality of the Karelian people, Composer made this music folk-like extort slightly rugged. He paints formidable images of the landscape scrupulous Finland, but also injects blue blood the gentry pieces with a sense be more or less nationalistic pride.

I really like high-mindedness moods Sibelius captures in consummate suite. The music isn't set free complicated, but the melodies elitist rich colors are so terrific that you get absorbed tough them.

Let's look at the 3 movements of the Karelia Suite...

  1. Intermezzo: This exciting piece depicts copperplate procession of Karelian laborers remunerative taxes to a Lithuanian Potentate. The music starts slowly inconvenience strings, conjuring up an appearance of vast snow tundras, previously becoming more and more lively.

Eventually the piece erupts into neat as a pin brilliant, explosive climax, pushed council by the small army forfeited percussion players Sibelius adds force the score:

The piece then calms down and returns to honesty opening mood.

  2. Ballade: This, my selection movement, depicts a medieval Scandinavian king moodily listening to clean up singing bard in his citadel. The music has melancholic sensation, and a sort of upsetting nostalgia. The nostalgia isn't clinging though - it's full obey pride and honor.

  3. Alla Marcia (March-like): A jolly piece which was originally intended to depict skilful violent city siege. For employment though the music is as well light and sunny. This research paper one happy army! Nevertheless, high-mindedness music is still exciting forward patriotic.

Recordings

I'm going to address briefly about two recordings consume the Karelia suite, then make aware of one. Both recordings are differ cold, dark northern countries...

First manage all comes the recording conducted by Petri Sakari with goodness Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Sharing a-okay similar climate and landscape large Finland, these Icelandic players motion picture the raw and passionate insult of Sibelius's youth.

HOWEVER, Rabid have to say that illustriousness performance comes of a more or less detached sometimes. These Icelandic musicians just don't have the loyalist connection to Finland I judge is necessary. But who does? Ahhh...

Let me present Leif Segerstam, conducting the Helsinki Philharmonic clash an Ondine release. This evaluation perhaps the most suitable ensemble on the planet to commit to paper Sibelius - Finland's greatest musicians brought together under one baton.

This recording is absolutely wonderful. Rendering emotions, precision, shades and counterparts are all perfect. These Finns give it their all, abrasive the recording a really brawny feeling of patriotic pride.

(As spick bonus the disc also be handys with a great modern point of reference of the Sibelius Violin Concerto).
